Devil Dogs and Phantoms

September 28, 2010

Devil dogs wail at the crescent moon
A fragment of some long cherished island
Projects itself out of the sky, into the garden pond
A slice of lemon on its tremulous surface
And, to our dismay, it still remains unreachable

These are the games we play after dark
We are phantoms who have not made it to heaven yet
Instead we dance gracefully over our terrain of regret
We hold hands, we leap across the land
And, just for a moment, we are free

Invisible mostly, but every now and then
We flicker into sight. The living call us ‘ghosts’
And assault us with priests and holy water
From which we flinch because it burns
We retreat, preparing for a counter-attack

I was the voluntary absentee

I effaced myself most willingly

Mine is a heart blown apart

Dislocated shards of plate glass

Flap down, smashing against

the ground. I too descend

You are no longer my friend

For I have made myself known

And once again you are alone

I close the prison gate

And it is far too late

To wonder if the destination

Has been worth the devastation

What do you do if you feel you do not belong? Not to a group of people, a nationality of people, a race of people, but to the species itself, to the planet itself. You are a minority of one. Somehow alien in a way nobody has ever been able to put their finger upon. But they know you are an outslder. They sense it. They smell blood. Human beings are pack animals just like any other. We have been ever since our inception and I don’t see that changing anytime soon. Maybe an angel made a clerical error.  All I want is for the world to stop so that I can get off.

Napoleon

Ani Difranco

They told you your music could reach millions
the choice was up to you
you told me they always pay for lunch
and they believe in what I do
and I wonder if you’ll miss your old friends
once you’ve proven what you’re worth
and I wonder when you’re a big star
will you miss the earth?
and I know you always, always want more
I know you, you’ll never be done

because everyone is a fucking napoleon
everyone is a fucking napoleon

and the next time that I saw you
you were larger than life
yeah you came and you conquered
you were doing all right
you had an army of suits behind you
and all you had to be was willing
and I said I still make a pretty good living
you must make a killing, a killing
and I hope that, that you are happy
I hope that at least you are having fun

oh but everyone is a fucking napoleon
well everyone is a fucking napoleon

you say that, so that’s the way it’s gonna be
so that’s what this is all about
I think that that’s the way it always was
you chose not to notice until now
oh now that, now that there’s a problem
you call me up to confide
and you go on for over an hour
about each one that took you for a ride
and I guess that you dialed my number
because you thought for sure that I’d agree
I said baby, you know I still love you
but how dare you complain to me?

oh but everyone is a fucking napoleon
everyone is a fucking napoleon
everyone is a fucking napoleon

They told you your music could reach millions
the choice was up to you
you told me they always pay for lunch
and they believe in what I do
and I wonder if you’ll miss your old friends
once you’ve proven what you’re worth
and I wonder when you’re a big star
will you miss the earth?
and I know you always, always want more
I know you, you’ll never be done

oh but everyone is a fucking napoleon
everyone is a fucking napoleon
everyone is a fucking napoleon

A Long Taxi Ride

Farewell Angelina
The bells of the crown
Are being stolen by bandits
I must follow the sound
The triangle tingles
And the trumpet play slow
Farewell Angelina
The sky is on fire
And I must go.

There’s no need for anger
There’s no need for blame
There’s nothing to prove
Ev’rything’s still the same
Just a table standing empty
By the edge of the sea
Farewell Angelina
The sky is trembling
And I must leave.

The jacks and queens
Have forsaked the courtyard
Fifty-two gypsies
Now file past the guards
In the space where the deuce
And the ace once ran wild
Farewell Angelina
The sky is folding
I’ll see you in a while.

See the cross-eyed pirates sitting
Perched in the sun
Shooting tin cans
With a sawed-off shotgun
And the neighbors they clap
And they cheer with each blast
Farewell Angelina
The sky’s changing color
And I must leave fast.

King Kong, little elves
On the rooftoops they dance
Valentino-type tangos
While the make-up man’s hands
Shut the eyes of the dead
Not to embarrass anyone
Farewell Angelina
The sky is embarrassed
And I must be gone.

The machine guns are roaring
The puppets heave rocks
The fiends nail time bombs
To the hands of the clocks
Call me any name you like
I will never deny it
Farewell Angelina
The sky is erupting
I must go where it’s quiet.

Farewell Angelina, Joan Baez
