Open Letter to Laurie Penny

Dear Laurie/Ms. Penny/Laurie Penny,

I read your article and I was wondering whether you could write an article dealing with the New Coalition’s position on the Mentally Ill and, in particular, the actions they intend to take on benefits as I am absolutely terrified about what is about to happen.  Believe me I would love to be employed; it shows that you belong, that society accepts you, that it values you. And I can see the value in paid employment in enabling re-engagement with society but by pushing people into work prematurely, when the mentally ill are still symptomatic would be hideously counterproductive and may make employers even less inclined to employ this group of people in the future.  The mentally ill who failed to cope with the jobs they are given  would be back where they started sans disability benefits and sans valuable social support.

Yours Rielouise

Another in response to this: The Welfare State We’re In.
What happens to those with severe mental health problems?  We could forcibly incarcerate them in those Victorian psychiatric hospitals on the edges of our cities but that would necessitate time travel as I believe they were demolished at the behest of the Tories in the late ’80s/ early ’90s.  Well done, Tories!

Hi. You should be able to access details of the recent coalition agreement at (see section 7)
My impression is that they have agreed to focus on those who have been unemployed for not very long. And even then the legislative process can tend to be quite slow.
Hope this is of some use.

Pretty insightful post. Never thought that it was this simple after all. I had spent a good deal of my time looking for someone to explain this subject clearly and you’re the only one that ever did that. Kudos to you! Keep it up

    Hi people,

What online zines do you read and would recommend? I am a die hard fan of emo.

For all you rockabilly folks out there I recommend The Enough Fanzine. It is one of the first emo fanzines on the web.

They have throusands of reviews from the most independent bands all over the world. Check them out online: Enough Fanzine. Best of it all, they are 100% non-profit and just helping the scene!

    Looking forward to your recommendations.
